The Work We Do: Identifying Vicarious Trauma and Tools to Assist

Summary of Course:   

Burn care professionals frequently experience vicarious trauma after caring for burn patients due to the horrific nature of burn trauma. Unfortunately, burn care professionals who practice burn nursing lack understanding, awareness, and identification of vicarious trauma. Through this video educational presentation, the learner will have a better understanding of how to identify vicarious trauma and how to recognize the impact and learn tools to assist. After the course, the learner will be provided with materials from the Phoenix Society multiple times per year.

It is Not In Your Head: Managing Chronic Issues After a Burn Injury

1 Hour | $25

Summary of Course:   

Burn survivors frequently experience chronic issues years after a burn injury.  Unfortunately, burn care professionals who practice burn nursing lack understanding of, and the ability to identify and communicate, these chronic conditions.  Through this educational video presentation, along with multiple activities, the learner will gain a better understanding of how to identify and implement strategies to help survivors and caregivers manage chronic conditions.  The tools learned will enhance aftercare and discharge planning. The learner is given time before and after the video presentation to participate in an exercise activity. (See Below). After the course, the participant will receive resources from the Phoenix Society multiple times per year.

Does It Get Better? Coping With Caregiver's Guilt 2026

Summary of Course:   

Caregivers of burn survivors frequently experience “caregiver guilt”.  Unfortunately, burn care professionals who practice burn nursing may lack understanding and the identification of caregiver guilt.  Through this video educational presentation, along with multiple group activities, the learner will have a better understanding of how to identify and implement strategies for caregivers to deal with guilt and shame.  The tools learned will enhance aftercare and discharge planning. After the course – the participant will be provided resources from the Phoenix Society multiple times per year.

The Journey From Loss to Gain

1 Hour | $25

Summary of Course:   

Burn survivors frequently experience some sort of loss after a burn injury, including financial, body image, disabilities, and physical suffering.  Unfortunately, burn care professionals who practice burn nursing may lack understanding and the identification of the losses during a burn recovery.  Through this video educational presentation, the learner will have a better understanding of how to identify and implement strategies for survivors and caregivers to deal with these losses and how to transition from loss to gain.  The tools learned will enhance aftercare and discharge planning.

Burn Hypertrophic Scars - What We Know, What We Need to Learn, and How We Can Help

1 Hour | $25

Summary of Course:   

This overview of burn hypertrophic scar will review the basics of scar formation and what research is still needed to better understand scars that occur following burn injury. We will discuss currently available treatment options for burn scar, with a special emphasis on lasers for the treatment of hypertrophic scar. Through this video educational presentation, the learner will have a better understanding of how to identify and implement treatment strategies for survivors and caregivers.  Photos and video will be used to demonstrate this tool. Burn team members as well as burn survivors with experience undergoing laser scar revision are the intended audience(s) and will use the tools learned to enhance aftercare and discharge planning.  

Almost Everything You'll Need to Know About How to Sleep Well

Summary of Course:   

Burn patients in the hospital and post hospitalization frequently have difficulty sleeping post injury. Unfortunately burn care professionals who practice burn nursing lack understanding of why burn patients have difficulties sleeping and tools to aid in improving sleep after they go home. After viewing this video educational presentation, the learner will have a better understanding of how to identify sleep disorders, factors that contribute to decreased ability to sleep and strategies to improve sleep in burn patients. The tools learned will enhance aftercare and discharge planning. 

The Psychosocial Care of the Burn Survivor

Summary of Course:

Burn patients recovering from a burn injury require psychosocial care and considerations in addition to their physical acute care. Unfortunately, many burn care professionals who practice burn nursing lack understanding of psychosocial care and considerations. After viewing the video educational presentation, the learner will have a better understanding of the psychosocial needs of burn survivors, the significance of preparing the nursing staff, assessment considerations, and the physical, social, and emotional response to trauma, family dynamics, and considerations for children.

This introductory course offers a comprehensive overview of Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors and its vital role in supporting individuals and families impacted by a burn injury. Participants will be introduced to the organization’s mission, values, and history, gaining insight into how Phoenix Society has shaped and strengthened the burn community for decades. Through enduring/independent course, participants will become familiar with key programs, resources, and services that empower burn survivors, their loved ones, and the professionals who care for them. The course will highlight meaningful ways to engage with the Phoenix Society community—whether through ongoing education, peer-to-peer connection, volunteer opportunities, or advocacy efforts that advance recovery and resilience. 

Healing, Hope, and Employment - Your Return to Work Journey

1.00 Hours | $25

Description: Summary of course:   

Returning to work is an important part of a burn survivor’s recovery.  Returning to work provides a sense of purpose and identity, provides routine and structure, social connection, and financial independence.  Burn care professionals lack the understanding of how to evaluate a survivor’s readiness to return to work and the four required phases for successful work reentry.  After viewing the educational video, the learner will be better prepared to discuss the requirements for workplace return, explore options for minimizing situational stress, and the implementation of strategies for psychological resilience.
